The Fishing
Fishing Questions
When is the best time to fly fish?
Our fishing season runs from late May through mid-October, with each month offering unique opportunities. Early season brings aggressive fish on streamers and salmonfly hatches. Midsummer (July–August) is peak dry fly season with prolific hatches. Fall delivers solitude, big browns, and stunning colors. No matter when you visit, we'll put you on the fish.
Do I need prior fly fishing experience?
Not at all. Whether you're a seasoned angler or holding a fly rod for the first time, our expert guides tailor the experience to your skill level. We work with anglers of every ability — from first-time casters to veterans chasing trophy fish.
What equipment should I bring?
If you have a favorite rod or lucky flies, bring them along! But everything you need — rods, reels, waders, boots, flies, and end tackle — is included in your package. Travel light and fish in style. See our Trip Planning page for a full packing list.
Is a fishing license required?
Yes. Anglers 12 and older need a valid Montana fishing license, which can be purchased online in advance. You'll also need a conservation license and invasive species pass. Our staff is happy to assist you upon arrival. Full details and pricing are on our Trip Planning page.
Can I keep the fish I catch?
Montana Fly Fishing Lodge strictly practices barbless, catch-and-release fishing to preserve these legendary fisheries for generations to come. Snap a great photo, tell an even greater story, and let that beauty swim another day.
What does Orvis-Endorsed mean?
Being Orvis-Endorsed means we meet the highest standards for accommodations, guiding, and service. Montana Fly Fishing Lodge was an Orvis Fly Fishing Lodge of the Year Finalist in 2024. It means you can expect expert guides, premium gear, and an experience that's second to none.
Booking & Logistics
Planning Your Trip
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak season (July–August), which can fill 6–12 months in advance. Early and late season dates offer more flexibility. Don't wait — reach out today and we'll help you secure the perfect dates.
What's included in the package?
Every stay is all-inclusive: lodging, all meals (breakfast, streamside lunch, multi-course dinner), professional guides, drift boat and walk-wade trips, fly shop access, gear rental, airport transfers from Billings (BIL), evening cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, and gear storage. See our Packages page for full details.
What's the deposit and cancellation policy?
A 50% deposit secures your reservation, with the balance due 90 days before arrival. Cancellations 90+ days out receive a credit toward a future trip within 24 months (less CC fees). Cancellations under 89 days are non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance.
How do I get there?
Fly into Billings Logan International Airport (BIL) — about 60 miles from the lodge. We provide complimentary airport transfers. Bozeman (BZN) and Cody, WY (YRA) are also options. Full details on our Trip Planning page.
What should I wear?
Montana's weather can be unpredictable, so layers are your best friend. Quick-dry clothing, a rain jacket, polarized sunglasses, and a good hat are musts. Casual attire is acceptable at the lodge for all occasions. See our full packing list.

Are non-angling guests welcome?
Absolutely. We offer non-angling adventures including horseback riding, hiking, Yellowstone National Park excursions, spa treatments, golf at nearby courses, and exploring charming local towns. The lodge itself — gourmet dining, fire pit evenings, mountain views — is an experience on its own. See our Non-Angling Adventures page.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes. Our culinary program accommodates vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher-style, keto, pescatarian, and other dietary needs with care and creativity. Just let us know when you book. See our Dining page for details.
What is the recommended gratuity?
Fishing Guides: $150–$200 per guide per day is customary. Please tip your guide directly in cash or via Venmo.
Lodge Staff: $100 per guest per day, shared among the entire team. Tips can be added to your final bill, paid through Venmo/Zelle, or given in cash at checkout. 100% goes to the team taking care of you.

What's the difference between the two lodges?
The Flagship Lodge sits on East Rosebud Creek with access to 7+ rivers — it's the original property with handcrafted log lodge, canvas cabins, and the full Montana experience. Spring Creek Lodge is more intimate — a secluded mountain valley with 4.5 miles of private spring creek, gourmet dining, and the thinking angler's destination.
