Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge

Montana Fly Fishing Lodge is an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Lodge — and one of three Top 3 Finalists for Orvis Lodge of the Year in 2024. The only Orvis Endorsed lodge of this caliber in the Northern Rockies.

Since 1984 · The Fly Fishing Industry's Standard

What Orvis Endorsed Actually Means

Orvis has been vetting and endorsing fly fishing lodges, outfitters, and guides since 1984. The Orvis Endorsed Lodge Outfitter and Guide Program is the most recognized quality certification in the fly fishing industry — not a paid listing, not a star rating from anonymous reviewers, but an annual evaluation by Orvis staff against documented standards covering guide quality, client experience, equipment, and ethics.

To be Orvis Endorsed, a lodge must meet specific requirements: guides certified through Orvis's guide training and assessment program, fly shop inventory meeting Orvis standards, participation in the annual review process, and sustained client satisfaction tracked by Orvis directly through post-trip surveys. Endorsement can be revoked. Properties are re-evaluated on an ongoing basis. It is not a one-time credential.

For an angler choosing a fly fishing lodge, the Orvis Endorsed designation is a meaningful signal. It means the lodge has been visited, evaluated, and approved by people who do nothing but evaluate fly fishing lodges. It means the guides have been assessed by a program that exists independent of the lodge's marketing. It means the experience you'll have tracks against a standard that someone other than the lodge itself has set.

Montana Fly Fishing Lodge holds this endorsement across both of our properties — Spring Creek Lodge and the Flagship Lodge — and has maintained it continuously. In 2024, Orvis recognized MFL as one of three Lodge of the Year Finalists in the United States.

Certified Guides

Every guide on our team meets the Orvis guide certification standards — assessed on casting instruction, fish identification, river ecology, first aid, and client communication. Guide quality is the core of the endorsement. Ours are measured against an independent standard, not just our own opinion of them.

Annual Orvis Review

Orvis evaluates endorsed lodges on an ongoing basis through client surveys and periodic staff visits. The endorsement is not purchased and cannot be maintained by inertia — it reflects current performance, tracked continuously. A lodge that slips loses the designation.

Full Orvis Fly Shop

Both lodges carry Orvis rods, reels, waders, packs, and fly selections meeting Orvis's gear standards. Loaner gear is available for guests who prefer to travel light. Our shop is stocked to handle any equipment need that comes up during your stay — including the fly that you didn't tie before you left home.
2024 Orvis-Endorsed Lodge of the Year

Top 3 Finalist — Nationally

In 2024, Orvis named Montana Fly Fishing Lodge one of three Top 3 Finalists for the Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year — the highest annual recognition Orvis gives to a lodge property in the United States. MFL was one of three lodges selected from the full roster of Orvis Endorsed lodges across the country.

The Lodge of the Year recognition is awarded based on sustained guide quality, client experience scores from post-trip surveys, lodge standards, and Orvis's overall evaluation of the property. It is not a vote or a popularity contest. The three finalists for 2024 were Montana Fly Fishing Lodge, South Holston River Lodge in Tennessee, and The White River Inn in Arkansas — the latter winning the 2024 award. Being one of three lodges in the United States to reach this level in a given year is a meaningful measure of where we stand in the industry.

We display the Orvis-issued 2024 Finalist badge on our site with their permission, using the terminology Orvis licenses us to use. It is a standard we hold ourselves to, not merely a marketing line. Our guides, our lodges, and our operation are measured against an independent external benchmark every year. The 2024 recognition reflects the result of that sustained effort.

The Evaluation
Independent Assessment
Lodge of the Year finalists are selected by Orvis staff evaluating guide performance, client survey data, lodge standards, and overall operation quality. No lodge nominates itself. The evaluation is continuous across the calendar year and the designation reflects sustained performance, not a single exceptional season.
The Finalists
Three Lodges · One Standard
MFL was one of three lodges in the United States named as a 2024 finalist — alongside South Holston River Lodge (Tennessee) and The White River Inn (Arkansas, winner). Being in that group means Orvis placed MFL in the same tier as the best-performing endorsed properties in the country across the full year.
Going Forward
The Same Standard, Every Year
The 2024 recognition informs what we do in 2025 and beyond. Orvis evaluates annually. Our guide team, our lodges, and our client experience don't downshift in a non-award year — the evaluation cycle is continuous, and we operate with that in mind. The endorsement is a baseline, not a ceiling.

The Orvis Endorsed Montana Fly Fishing Lodge Properties

Montana Fly Fishing Lodge operates two distinct Orvis Endorsed lodge properties in south-central Montana, each offering a different character of fly fishing from a fully-staffed, all-inclusive base. Both share the same guide team, the same Orvis standards, and the same owner-operated approach to the guest experience.

Absarokee, Montana

Flagship Lodge

Our original and largest property, set on the Stillwater River in Absarokee, Montana — at the base of the Beartooth Mountains, at the eastern edge of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Nine ensuite guest rooms, full-service operation, and access to six distinct river systems within a day's float: the Stillwater, Yellowstone, Boulder, Clark Fork, Bighorn, and smaller mountain tributaries.

The Flagship Lodge is where most guests begin their first trip with us. Multi-night packages are all-inclusive: meals, guiding, boats, gear, and access to our full river portfolio. The lodge sits on a working ranch in one of the least-pressured corners of Montana's fly fishing landscape.

Big Timber, Montana

Spring Creek Lodge

A five-room lodge built from hand-scribed Montana ponderosa pine on the Drange family's fourth-generation working ranch, south of Big Timber and a short drive from the Paradise Valley spring creek corridor. Spring Creek Lodge is the closest full-service, all-inclusive Orvis Endorsed lodge to DePuy's, Armstrong's, and Nelson's Spring Creeks — three of the most technically demanding private fisheries in North America.

Packages include rod reservations on the Paradise Valley spring creeks, access to 4.5 miles of private spring creek on the ranch property, upper Yellowstone River floats, and the full all-inclusive experience: gourmet dining, guided days, Orvis gear. Capacity limited to five rooms — the experience is intentionally small.

The Dual Lodge Experience →

Combine nights at both properties for a single trip spanning the spring creek corridor and the Stillwater–Yellowstone freestone rivers. The Dual Lodge Experience is the full Northern Rockies fly fishing itinerary — two Orvis Endorsed lodges, two river systems, two experiences in one trip. Transfers between properties are coordinated. You unpack once.
