What Orvis Endorsed Actually Means
Orvis has been vetting and endorsing fly fishing lodges, outfitters, and guides since 1984. The Orvis Endorsed Lodge Outfitter and Guide Program is the most recognized quality certification in the fly fishing industry — not a paid listing, not a star rating from anonymous reviewers, but an annual evaluation by Orvis staff against documented standards covering guide quality, client experience, equipment, and ethics.
To be Orvis Endorsed, a lodge must meet specific requirements: guides certified through Orvis's guide training and assessment program, fly shop inventory meeting Orvis standards, participation in the annual review process, and sustained client satisfaction tracked by Orvis directly through post-trip surveys. Endorsement can be revoked. Properties are re-evaluated on an ongoing basis. It is not a one-time credential.
For an angler choosing a fly fishing lodge, the Orvis Endorsed designation is a meaningful signal. It means the lodge has been visited, evaluated, and approved by people who do nothing but evaluate fly fishing lodges. It means the guides have been assessed by a program that exists independent of the lodge's marketing. It means the experience you'll have tracks against a standard that someone other than the lodge itself has set.
Montana Fly Fishing Lodge holds this endorsement across both of our properties — Spring Creek Lodge and the Flagship Lodge — and has maintained it continuously. In 2024, Orvis recognized MFL as one of three Lodge of the Year Finalists in the United States.

Top 3 Finalist — Nationally
In 2024, Orvis named Montana Fly Fishing Lodge one of three Top 3 Finalists for the Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year — the highest annual recognition Orvis gives to a lodge property in the United States. MFL was one of three lodges selected from the full roster of Orvis Endorsed lodges across the country.
The Lodge of the Year recognition is awarded based on sustained guide quality, client experience scores from post-trip surveys, lodge standards, and Orvis's overall evaluation of the property. It is not a vote or a popularity contest. The three finalists for 2024 were Montana Fly Fishing Lodge, South Holston River Lodge in Tennessee, and The White River Inn in Arkansas — the latter winning the 2024 award. Being one of three lodges in the United States to reach this level in a given year is a meaningful measure of where we stand in the industry.
We display the Orvis-issued 2024 Finalist badge on our site with their permission, using the terminology Orvis licenses us to use. It is a standard we hold ourselves to, not merely a marketing line. Our guides, our lodges, and our operation are measured against an independent external benchmark every year. The 2024 recognition reflects the result of that sustained effort.

The Orvis Endorsed Montana Fly Fishing Lodge Properties
Montana Fly Fishing Lodge operates two distinct Orvis Endorsed lodge properties in south-central Montana, each offering a different character of fly fishing from a fully-staffed, all-inclusive base. Both share the same guide team, the same Orvis standards, and the same owner-operated approach to the guest experience.
Flagship Lodge
Our original and largest property, set on the Stillwater River in Absarokee, Montana — at the base of the Beartooth Mountains, at the eastern edge of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Nine ensuite guest rooms, full-service operation, and access to six distinct river systems within a day's float: the Stillwater, Yellowstone, Boulder, Clark Fork, Bighorn, and smaller mountain tributaries.
The Flagship Lodge is where most guests begin their first trip with us. Multi-night packages are all-inclusive: meals, guiding, boats, gear, and access to our full river portfolio. The lodge sits on a working ranch in one of the least-pressured corners of Montana's fly fishing landscape.
Spring Creek Lodge
A five-room lodge built from hand-scribed Montana ponderosa pine on the Drange family's fourth-generation working ranch, south of Big Timber and a short drive from the Paradise Valley spring creek corridor. Spring Creek Lodge is the closest full-service, all-inclusive Orvis Endorsed lodge to DePuy's, Armstrong's, and Nelson's Spring Creeks — three of the most technically demanding private fisheries in North America.
Packages include rod reservations on the Paradise Valley spring creeks, access to 4.5 miles of private spring creek on the ranch property, upper Yellowstone River floats, and the full all-inclusive experience: gourmet dining, guided days, Orvis gear. Capacity limited to five rooms — the experience is intentionally small.
