Our Waters

A variety of Montana rivers, creeks, and private waters at your doorstep. Fish different styles of water throughout your stay — a different river every day.

A Diverse Collection of Trout Water

Variety Within Reach

One of the greatest strengths of Montana Fly Fishing Lodge is the variety of water available right here in our region of south-central Montana. From private ranch spring creeks and stillwater lakes to freestones, mid-sized rivers, and iconic Western floats, our home waters offer something unique each day of your stay.

Rather than fishing the same stretch of water all week, our guides take pride in selecting the best river or creek for the conditions and your preferences — giving you a broad, memorable Montana fly fishing experience.

Our location in Absarokee gives us access to a remarkably wide range of water types — something not all regions in Montana can offer. Guests may wade a small freestone one day, float a bigger river the next, and end the week on a quiet spring creek with very little angling pressure.

These waters support strong populations of German Brown, Rainbow, Brook, and Yellowstone Cutthroat trout, offering varied angling opportunities throughout the season.

Explore Each River

The Major Rivers

Each river has its own character, its own hatches, and its own way of rewarding an angler's attention. Learn more about the waters we fish.

Yellowstone River →

Montana's longest undammed river. Big water, big fish, and stunning canyon scenery from a drift boat or on foot.

Stillwater River →

Crystal-clear freestone fed by the Beartooth Mountains. Exceptional dry fly water and our closest major river.

Boulder River →

Remote valley setting with willing trout and virtually no pressure. A hidden gem for anglers seeking solitude.

Bighorn River →

Montana's premier tailwater. Consistent flows, prolific hatches, and trout averaging 16–20 inches year-round.

Clark Fork of the Yellowstone →

A lesser-known gem flowing through ranch country. Underrated water with strong hatches and very little pressure.

Shoshone River →

Cross into Wyoming for aggressive cutthroat and rainbows in a dramatic canyon setting along the Yellowstone Highway.

Creeks & Smaller Waters →

East & West Rosebud, Rock Creek, and Red Lodge Creek. Intimate walk-and-wade fishing on technical small water.

Private Spring Creeks →

4.5 miles of exclusive access. Sight-fish to rising trout on pristine private water most anglers only dream about.

Mountain Lakes & Reservoirs

Burns Lake, Hogan & Luce Reservoirs, and backcountry mountain lakes. Stillwater options for a change of pace.
What Sets Us Apart

What Makes Our Waters Special

Many of these waters are fed by the high-elevation snowpack of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness — home to the tallest mountains in Montana — providing seasonal consistency that allows us to fish well, even as conditions change.

Variety Within Reach

Our location in Absarokee gives us access to a remarkably wide range of water types. Guests may wade a small freestone one day, float a bigger river the next, and end the week on a quiet spring creek.

Guided by Conditions

Our guides make daily decisions based on flows, weather, and angler goals. This adaptability means you're always fishing the best water available — not following a fixed rotation.

Unpressured Water

We deliberately choose waters that offer space and solitude. Many of our favorite stretches see a fraction of the pressure of more well-known destinations. The fishing is better for it.
"We fished a different river every day for five days. Each one had its own personality — the Yellowstone felt like big Western adventure, the Stillwater was crystal-clear perfection, and the spring creek was the most technical sight-fishing I've ever done. Incredible variety."
